Does this content need a label at all?
Not every AI image has to be labelled. The disclosure duty in Article 50(4) of the AI Act covers deep fakes and certain published texts, nothing more. Four questions and you'll know where you stand.

Common questions
Do I have to label every AI image?
No. The duty in Article 50(4) applies to deep fakes — image, audio or video content showing real people, objects, places, organisations or events that would falsely appear authentic. Published text on matters of public interest without editorial review is covered too. A freely invented, obviously artificial motif doesn't automatically fall under it.
Are the EU icons mandatory?
The icons are voluntary; the labelling duty in Article 50 is not. Using them doesn't make you compliant by itself — responsibility for adequate disclosure stays with whoever puts out the content. Signatories of the Code of Practice must also follow its placement rules.
Am I allowed to use the icons freely?
Yes. The Commission makes them available to everyone free of charge, with no attribution required. Non-signatories of the Code of Practice shouldn't present their use as a sign that they signed it.
What happens to my image on this page?
Nothing leaves your computer. The image is read, drawn and saved in the browser. There is no server, no database and no tracking — the page works offline as well.
Why does my image lose its old metadata after the icon is added?
Drawing to a canvas re-encodes the image, which drops the original EXIF, IPTC and XMP data. This tool then writes a fresh XMP block with your entries. To keep existing metadata such as copyright or capture data, use “Write metadata only” and add the icon in an image editor.
Does the Amazon tag also satisfy the EU rules?
No, these are two separate requirements. Amazon's contains-synthetic-performer is a machine-readable keyword for synthetic people in product media and goes back to US law. The EU rule asks for a disclosure people can perceive. On an Amazon image with an AI model showing real products convincingly, both can apply at once.
Can I show the icon as an overlay instead?
Yes, an overlay in the user interface counts as an equivalent alternative — as long as it shows on first exposure. One catch: the disclosure has to survive sharing and downloading. A pure CSS overlay disappears the moment someone saves the image.
